Kochi and Ernakulam, are they the same?

Ernakulam is the name of the district. Kochi is its city area. Inside Kochi City, Ernakulam refers to the downtown area.
Locally, Ernakulam refers to the mainland part of the city and Fort Kochi refers to the peninsular portion.
By the way Cochin is the anglicized name of Kochi.
[#rail]Railways goes by the name Ernakulam.
There are two main railway stations Ernakulam Junction (also called Ernakulam South, Code : ERS) and Ernakulam Town (also known as Ernakulam North, code: ERN). Both stations are located on the Ernakulam mainland part of the city.
Locally, Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town are simply referred as South and North respectively.
Long distance trains from Ernakulam originates from the South railway station (ERS). Many of these trains stop at the North station too. These two railway stations inside the city are just a few kilometers apart.
[#bus]Similarly the bus station (KSRTC Bus Stand) is called Ernakulam , is located close to the South railway station.
[#airport]When it comes to the airport, it goes by the name Kochi (Airport Code : COK). That is, the Cochin International Airport, from where both international and domestic flights operate.
Locally, Ernakulam and Fort Kochi portions of the city are linked by road and ferry across the backwaters.
