Boat in Kochi Backwaters with Biennale theme painting.
The exhibition is spread across multiple sites & in spaces across Kochi, with shows being held in galleries, halls, and site-specific installations in public spaces, heritage buildings and disused structures and so on. So visiting Biennale essentially means exploring a large part of the city, especially the Fort Kochi part overlooking the harbor.
If you are a serious art connoisseur, reserve many days to experience the Biennale. Apart from the exhibitions, there are scheduled shows, workshops , cinema shows , talk forums as part of this extravaganza.
Majority of the venue and the Biennale action is along the 4km ( 2½ miles) or so long seafront arc along the northeast part of the Fort Kochi.
The walk itself can take about 45 minutes. Of course you can hire the local auto rickshaws, at reasonable fare for short hops.
Start from the venues scattered around the Mattancherry Palace . Trek your way up along the Bazaar Road ( runs parallel to the seafront). Finish at the venues around the Parade Ground.
Well, you have covered most ( also most ) of the veviews. You may still wanted to visit the Durbar Hall venue which is on the Ernakulam side ( mainland side).
To visit the Biennale venues at Fort Kochi, take the ferry service from Ernakulam Boat Jetty. You may take the boat to Mattancherry or Fort Kochi. Both these ferry points are along the Biennale sites.
The Fourth edition of the Biennale was held from 12 December 2018 to 29 March 2019.
